What Do You Do With Surprise Commercial Electricity Bills?

Network with other business owners long enough and you are bound  to hear a story or two from owners of small, family-run businesses about surprise commercial electricity bills that were double or triple the normal bill. What would you do if your ill was a thousand pounds more than it normally is, assuming the bill isn’t a mistake?

Most likely you would say that there is no way you could pay a bill like that. Unfortunately, small family-ruin businesses are routinely hit with outrageous commercial electricity bills because their electricity provider claims they were undercharged before. This doesn’t usually happen to domestic customers because their bills can only be back-dated for one year but businesses have no protection like this. There is no restriction on how far back a commercial electricity supplier can back-date bills, they can go back years if they choose.

Small businesses have to take control of meter reading or they could face potentially ruinous demands from their commercial electricity supplier. Most suppliers will work with their business customers if this happens but there no law that forces thm to do so. They could cut off the electricity supply if they chose to, ruining a business. Small business owners need to be made aware of how dependent they are on their electricity supplier getting their bills correct.
